GOV.UK ID Check is a free utility app developed by the Government Digital Service. It allows UK citizens to verify their identity online, securely accessing certain government services. The app works by matching the user's face to their photo ID. To use the app, you need a valid UK photocard driving licence or passport with a biometric chip, an iPhone 6s or higher, and iOS 13 or higher.
The process is straightforward. If you have a driving licence, you take a photo of it and scan your face using your phone. If you have a passport, you take a photo of it, scan the biometric chip, and scan your face. Once the app confirms your identity, you return to the government service's website to view the results of your identity check. The app does not store your personal information on the phone and deletes it securely when no longer needed.
